What are solar irrigation controllers?
Solar irrigation controllers,
also known as solar-powered irrigation controllers or solar-powered irrigation timers, are devices used in agricultural irrigation systems to control and automate the watering of crops or landscapes. These controllers harness solar energy to power their operation, eliminating the need for external electrical power sources.

Solar irrigation controllers are equipped with photovoltaic (PV) panels that capture sunlight and convert it into electrical energy. This solar power is used to operate the controller and its associated irrigation system, allowing users to set customised watering schedules based on factors such as time, duration, and frequency.

What are the benefits of a solar irrigation controller?
Solar irrigation controllers are particularly useful in remote or off-grid locations where access to electricity is limited. They contribute to efficient water management practices, promote sustainable agriculture, and offer convenience and control to farmers and landscapers.

Solar irrigation controllers often include features to optimise water usage. They can incorporate weather sensors to adjust irrigation schedules automatically based on rainfall, temperature, humidity, or evapotranspiration rates. This helps prevent overwatering and promotes water efficiency.

Some solar irrigation controllers offer remote access and control capabilities through smartphone applications or web-based interfaces. This enables users to monitor and adjust irrigation settings from anywhere, providing convenience and flexibility.

Some solar irrigation controllers support modular expansion, allowing users to add additional sensors, valves, or other components as needed. This scalability enables customisation and adaptation to varying irrigation system requirements. Your local Irrigear expert will be able to assist with designing your irrigation and providing a customised system to suit your needs.

By utilising solar power, these controllers are environmentally friendly and cost-effective in the long run. Solar energy is renewable and readily available, making it a sustainable choice for powering irrigation systems.

Do I have to use a solar irrigation controller with a solar powered pump?
You can use a solar irrigation controller without a solar pump. Solar irrigation controllers are primarily responsible for controlling the timing and duration of irrigation cycles by opening and closing valves. They do not directly provide the pumping function. In a typical irrigation system, the solar transfer pump is responsible for drawing water from a water source, such as a well, pond, or reservoir, and delivering it to the irrigation system.

The solar irrigation controller turns valves on and off based on the programmed irrigation schedule. If the solar powered controller is working in conjunction with a solar pump (or other automated pressure source) the pump will generally start and stop based on its pressure sensors or another mechanism.

So, while a solar irrigation controller controls the timing of the pump indirectly, it doesn't necessarily have to be a solar pump. It can work with other types of pumps powered by electricity from the grid, batteries, or alternative energy sources. However, using a solar pump in conjunction with a solar irrigation controller can provide a more sustainable and efficient irrigation system by utilising solar power for both the pumping and control functions.

Are solar irrigation controllers expensive?
Generally, solar irrigation controllers tend to be more expensive than their traditional non-solar counterparts due to the added cost of incorporating solar panels and associated technology. However, there is a wide range available, to suit most requirements and budgets. Controllers with advanced features like weather-based scheduling, remote access, and expandability tend to be more expensive.

It's worth noting that while solar irrigation controllers may have a higher upfront cost compared to non-solar alternatives, they can offer long-term and short term cost savings by utilising solar power. Additionally, solar irrigation controllers contribute to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Consult with your local Irrigear expert and compare different models, features, and prices to find a solar irrigation controller that suits your requirements and budget.
