Solar Stock Water System for Charolais Stud - Member Case Study

Explore Ultimate Pumps and Irrigation's design and installation of a solar-powered stock water system.

The Goal

The client's goal in engaging Ultimate Pumps And Irrigation was to provide a reliable water supply for livestock throughout their property.
This would allow them to move away from their existing system, which relied on dams and regularly dried out during warmer months, forcing them to cart water from the local standpipe.

Location Overview

Located in Langley, Victoria (near Kyneton), the client is a Charolais stud farm with no mains power available on site.
Project challenges included steep terrain between the bore and storage location, and extremely wet ground conditions at the time of installation - created challenges for this project.

Pre-Project Consultation Notes

The client required the completed system to provide water supply for a Charolais stud setup, with water gravity-fed from storage tanks to livestock troughs across the property.

Achieving this would require a reliable supply of 10,000 litres of water per day from a bore, in order to provide year-round water for their livestock. In total, water water needed to be transferred 750 metres from the bore, in addition to being lifted 80 metres in elevation.

Project Products

Ultimate Pumps & Irrigation designed and installed a fully solar-powered water transfer system to provide a dependable and automated stock water supply. Combining both a submersible pump and a surface-mounted solar pump, the team were able to create a reliable solution.

The system includes:

☀️ A Lorentz PS2-1800-HRE-04H solar bore pump (submersible pump)

☀️ Pump chamber

☀️ Initial holding tank

☀️ A low-level float switch installed in the first holding tank

☀️ A Lorentz PS2-1800-HRE-07H2 surface-mounted solar pump

☀️ Four solar panels powering each solar pumping system

☀️ A double-acting float valve fitted to the second storage tank

The Process

The system begins with installation of the Lorentz PS2-1800-HRE-04H submersible solar bore pump within the client’s 115-metre-deep bore. This allowed water to be pumped into a holding tank located beside the bore.

This stage of the system is controlled by a low-level float switch installed in the first holding tank, which automatically starts the bore pump when the holding tank reaches the predetermined low-water level..

From here, the Lorentz PS2-1800-HRE-07H2 surface-mounted solar pump, housed within a horizontal stainless steel pump chamber, transfers water 750 metres away and 80 metres uphill to a second storage tank.

This storage tank is fitted with a double-acting float valve, which automatically controls the incoming water level.

From here, water is distributed via gravity to livestock troughs throughout the property.

The Outcome

The completed system provides the client with a reliable, off-grid water supply that eliminates dependence on seasonal dams and the need to cart water, ensuring consistent stock water throughout the year.
