Discover how submersible pumps can improve your farm water management.

If you’re still handling a lot of your farm water management manually, or are finding that your current systems aren’t as reliable as you’d like them to be, the implementation of some submersible pumps and associated systems can make your life a whole lot easier. In this blog we’re looking at five ways you can improve your farm water management with submersible pumps, so you can focus on other areas.
One of the most impactful ways that submersible pumps can help improve farm water management is through the installation of automatic water transfer systems. Gone are the days where your pump must be manually turned on and off when the need to transfer water arises, and portable pumps, while useful, are no longer an everyday necessity.
This makes it easy to move water between dams (or to your dam from the river), while also facilitating automated tank filling, therefore keeping your tanks full and water accessible.
Additionally, automated submersible pumping systems are the ideal solution for when you need to transfer large volumes of water across a significant period of time. For example, Water Supply Specialists, the Irrigear Independent Experts who service Colac and surrounding areas in Victoria, recently installed a large submersible pumping system which is currently moving water about 6km from a river to a dam. The system currently moves approximately 400,000L per day and runs for most of the day, however, if it were to run 24/7, it could accommodate automatic transfer of 600,000L a day.
Although they certainly have a place on any farm, dams are expensive to build and can be difficult to keep full, making them inefficient as the sole or main source of water for stock – especially if they need to be rotated often. This is where troughs and other stock watering systems come in. Submersible pumps are the easiest way to handle the filling of these as they allow you to raise water from bores, pump water from tanks or dams in other parts of the property, and ensure a secure water supply for your stock.
Historically, windmills have been used to draw and/or relocate water, but they’re not the most reliable option when constant water delivery or higher pressure levels are needed. Submersible pumps are an ideal replacement for an old windmill, as they negate the pitfalls of the previous technology.
For example, this image showcases a submersible solar pump that the Irrigear Tinamba team installed for a customer to replace their old windmill which powered the system that moved water from their bore and tank. This switch meant the customer continued to receive sustainable energy with enhanced reliability and no extra ongoing costs.
Effluent systems on farms are often twofold. Because many rural properties aren’t connected to the main sewage system, farmhouses often make use of septic tanks to handle household waste. This may or may not include the addition of a greywater diversion device, but will often require at least one submersible pump to function efficiently.
Additionally, where water used for agricultural purposes can be collected and used to provide nutrients to soil, submersible pumps also do a lot of the heavy lifting for these types of systems.
Submersible pumps are particularly helpful for those in the dairy industry, as they help ensure that the milking shed remains a safe environment for both workers and cattle. This is because, by assisting with the removal and treatment of effluent, submersibles help keep waste out of the parlour pits and working area.
Dairy farmers may also find that submersible pumps are useful for keeping their underpasses free from water during moderate to heavy rainfall, therefore making relocating cattle a safer experience for all involved.
