Check valves are used to ensure the flow direction in water, air and gas applications to prevent backflow in a piping system. The two most common styles of check valves are 'Spring' and 'Swing' Check Valves. Inline Spring and Swing Check Valves are used in a wide range of industries including Water, Air, Pumping as examples.

Why use an Inline Spring Check Valve or a Swing Check Valve?
Inline Spring Check Valves (sometimes called a 'Lift-Check Valve') in which a disc, sometimes called a 'lift' can be lifted off its seat by higher pressure of inlet upstream fluid to allow flow to the outlet or downstream side. A guide helps keep motion of the disc on a vertical line, so the valve can later reseat properly. When pressure is no longer higher, gravity or higher downstream pressure will cause the disc to lower onto its seat, shutting the valve to stop reverse flow. They can be fitted in Horizontal, Vertical, or oblique positions and are suitable for Hot/Cold water, Compressed Air, Oils.

Swing Check Valves are used where the flow moves through the valve in approximately a straight line like that in a gate valve, is commonly used in pipelines conveying liquids by gravity or pumping. Swing Check Valves are by far the most common check valve in any industry and are often a lower cost solution. However Swing Check Valves can only be installed in horizontal flow applications, which limits installation orientations.

AAP Inline Spring & Swing Check Valves Features & Benefits

The difference between Spring Check Valves and Swing Check Valves. The 'flapper' in a swing check valve 'swings' off the seat to allow forward flow and then swings back onto the seat when the flow is stopped. In contrast, Spring Check Valve incorporates a spring to assist in closing the check valve.
