Waste water treatment to stringent DPI standards is essential for project success, Cobram Irrigation

The Gloucester Coal Seam Gas Project is part of a long-term investment in the Gloucester, Victoria region by AGL to develop Australia's coal seam gas resources. The project includes the installation of gas wells, construction of a central processing facility and construction of a high-pressure pipeline to transport the gas. This is being developed in line with AGL's goal of low-emission and renewable energy generation.

The coal seams deep with the Gloucester Basin contain water as well as methane gas. The gas is trapped within the coal seams by the pressure of the surrounding water, so to extract gas the water must first be pumped out. This means that large quantities of water are normally an inevitable by-product of coal seam methane gas production.

Cobram Irrigation in conjunction with fellow IRRIGEAR Stores and NSW-based Blooms Irrigation was successfull in tendering for the installation of equipment to facilitate the distribution of this water onto nearby agricultural land. This process will be undertaken through a Valley Linear Move Irrigator after the water has been treated in holding ponds and shandied with local river water. The site has also been fitted with Mait Soil Moisture Sensors which are tied to the remote control of the Irrigator to ensure no more water is applied than is necessary to support healthy plant growth and soil health.

All activities are first approved by the DPI to ensure adherence to stringent environmental management plans.

A pro-active focus on environmental rehabilitation and monitoring

Irrigation Tasmania was contracted to design and construct a system to capture and pump water from an old tailings dam to an existing treatment plant at a major mine site located on the West Coast of Tasmania. The project scope included — earth works, pump and pipeline design, telemetry and control, a new HV electricity supply, steel fabrication, project management and commissioning.

The mine owner, with a pro-active focus on environmental rehabilitation and monitoring, worked closely with Irrigation Tasmania during the course of the project – which saw the de-commissioning of existing mine 'wet lands' and the re-construction of ponds for the capture of all water from old tailings dams.

The project installed a 110Kw pump, on a suspended platform, with variable speed drive to maintain constant pumping level in ponds, dependent on inflows. A pump station was constructed, for MCC, control system and telemetry.

Pipe work and pipe lines were supplied and installed, along with control valves and associated equipment. All project components were tested and commissioned.
