A long-standing relationship with local growers yields long-term results for Cobram Irrigation

The Diaco family immigrated to Australia from Italy in the 1950s. In Cobram, Victoria they established approximately 50 acres of stone fruit orchards and commenced a 45-year relationship with the Love family (owners of Cobram Irrigation) as their primary provider of irrigation components and pumping equipment.

A further 136 acres of stone fruit and citrus plantations have since been developed on a number of blocks within the Cobram district – it's no wonder that the Diaco name is now synonymous with one of the largest agricultural developments the district has ever seen.

Planting of a 600-acre citrus orchard near Barrigan began in the spring of 2010, as part of a $10 million agricultural venture. Stage 1 comprises 300 acres: 50% oranges, 25% lemons and 25% mandarins, all of which are seedless varieties. The first harvest is planned for 2013.

Cobram Irrigation was appointed to install the irrigation system. Approximately 5 kms of PVC pipe is being laid to deliver water to the orchard from a 150 megalitre dam fed from the Berrigan Number 1 Channel. Netafim soil moisture monitoring probes will automatically control the amount of water being applied to the trees.

Drought-proofing pays off

In 2006 the owners of Nasmin Vineyards in Mount Compass approached McLaren Vale Irrigation with a brief — they wished to drought-proof their vineyard and olive plantation; and to increase the water yield on the total property.

The property had been planted in stages over many years, with each stage having its own irrigation system which did not always integrate with each other. As well, a very large dam situated on the property was unused. McLaren Vale Irrigation pulled together all the existing data and previous irrigation plans and made one large master plan – to get a full understanding of the total existing system. This was our starting point for making decisions on how to link everything together.

One of the first decision made was to make use of the dam, through the deployment of a new floating submersible pump in the dam.

This pump delivered 160m3 per hour into the system. Interconnecting main lines were installed in such a way that water could be taken from any one of four existing water sources directly to anywhere on the property.

In the first year following the upgrade, grape production rose from 150 tonnes to 700 tonnes in one season – attributed to being able to efficiently deliver more water onto the vines than ever before. With the help of McLaren Vale Irrigation Nasmin has since further upgraded the control system to a centralised control that allows full integration of all water sources and management to any block that needs water.

Consistent service quality and local knowledge is the key to the success for Rural Irrigation Supplies

Dobies Bight dairy farmers, Sam and Fleur Tonge have been utilising the services of Rural Irrigation Supplies for nearly 30 years. Since moving to the area in September of 1981 to start their dairy farming venture to the current day, Sam and Fleur talk fondly of all of the projects they have worked on with the staff at Rural Irrigation Supplies.

Milking a peak of 235 cows, producing approximately 1.8 million litres of milk annually and managing nearly 200 hectares of land means that when something goes wrong Sam and Fleur rely on fast efficient service to get the farm back on track. Sam and Fleur run their business on the principles of loyalty and respect. Sam referred to these as ‘old-fashioned’ principles, but acknowledged that it was the belief in these same principles by the owners of Rural Irrigation Supplies that had allowed their relationship to be fostered all of those years.

Sam stated very clearly that the service he had always received from original owners, Terry and Carol Brown, was matched by current owners Mark and Jackie Bratti. He was grateful that he could call for assistance, no matter the time or day. He said that Terry and Mark had executed a successful succession plan which had meant that life for customers of Rural Irrigation Supplies felt no bumps when the company changed hands.

Starting from scratch, Sam and Terry worked together to put in a plan that would let the farm evolve over time. Using this foresight, which at the time of installation was much more than required, they installed the necessary infrastructure that would allow future projects to be integrated seamlessly. These days Rural Irrigation Supplies manage all stock, domestic and dairy water supply issues along with the irrigation.

High-stakes olive grove demands mighty water management

Problem

Australia’s then-largest single olive grove project, Boort Olive Estate, required massive volumes of water to irrigate more than one hundred thousand trees. One of the largest projects of its kind in the world, Olivecorp Land Ltd appointed Quipright - in association with Irrigear store – Cobram Irrigation - in early 2000 to complete initial stages of the Timbercorp Boort Olive Project.

The irrigation phase of the project required completion within 12 weeks, resulting in a highly efficient agricultural irrigation system.

Irrigear Solution

Irrigear store - Cobram Irrigation designed and installed an immense system of drip hose, drip line, drip tube and PVC pipe covering more than 360 hectares.

17 semi-trailer loads of PVC pipe and fittings were required and over one million metres of drip line drip tube were laid to irrigate the eventual planting of more than 124,000 olive trees.

Results

The successful project was completed and its opening attended by the then-treasurer of Victoria, John Brumby. Now owned by Boundary Bend Ltd, the olive grove plantation has grown into one of the world’s largest single olive grove estates with nearly one million olive trees covering 2,700 hectares.

Farm switch turns dryland crop into fully irrigated potato paradise

Problem

A farming family in Euston wanted to turn an existing dryland crop into a fully functioning irrigated farm. Mendook Station covered 2,800 acres on the state border between NSW and VIC and its former use as a dryland cropping enterprise meant extensive irrigation on the site was never undertaken.

Irrigear Solution

Irrigear store - Cobram Irrigation delivered design and planning that provided efficient and reliable water management for a large-scale farm.

The property was divided into 24 x 110 acre centre pivot sites with up to five centre pivots operating simultaneously.

Water was supplied from the Murray River, ten kilometres away, through a 550mm Poly pipeline laid parallel to a local road (Pruangle Road). A floating pontoon with 3 x 45kW Davey pumps was installed on the river, transferring 25 mega litres per day into a 400 mega litre storage dam located on the property.

Results

The Mendook Station has been transformed successfully from a non water intensive dryland crop operation into a fully-irrigated farm capable of producing potatoes and winter cereals.

Water utility ramps up recycled town water

Problem

A water utility company in northern Victoria was required to comply with state regulations concerning management of wastewater.

North East Water specifically needed a solution to increase re-use of wastewater generated by the municipality of Benalla, developing the company's environmental sustainability practices.

Irrigear Solution

Irrigear store - Cobram Irrigation delivered a solution that distributed wastewater to crops on the outskirts of Benalla.

3 x Valley Centre Pivots were installed in required areas, supplied by pipelines, pumps and electrical works.

Results

More than half of the town’s wastewater is now redirected for agricultural use, increasing water conservation for Benalla and saving taxpayer expense on agricultural irrigation. North East Water happily complies with state regulation and continues to enjoy good brand reputation through business practices that help the community.
